Peaceful training with Aikido clothing
Aikido stands for: Way (do) of harmony (ai) of energy (ki) and is a path of practice and experience that originally developed from the martial arts of the samurai. In aikido, it is customary to wear a keiko-gi, which originates from judo. This is just another name for the judo-gi. These are usually made of cotton with a rice grain weave. The fabric weight is often specified as a characteristic of a keikogi, in grams per square metre (abbreviated to g/sqm or gsm). Possible values are 300, 350, 450, 550, 650, 750, 850 or 950. In addition, aikidoka can wear a hakama, a type of divided skirt, over the gi. The colour of the hakama is irrelevant. However, black or dark blue hakama are usually worn in aikido.
Practising aikido with training weapons
Special training weapons are often used as well. These are employed in deliberately initiated duel situations. This not only allows defence to be practised, but also offers the opportunity to discover one's own weaknesses and mistakes. Suborito and bokken are standard accessories. These are made of wood and foam and are manufactured specifically for training purposes.
Aikido – more than just self-defence
The sport of aikido is often described as purely self-defence. But it offers so much more! In this martial art, the fighter strives to become one with themselves and their actions. They act according to the principle: ‘Softness defeats hardness’ – attacks are carried out less with hardness and strength and more with softness and openness. Meditation, which is often combined with this, perfectly complements the movement-intensive side of this martial art. Every aikidoka is obliged to take into account the age, level and physical condition of their fighting partner.
